Arrival/Route

Your Hotel in Kathmandu

The Laya Gasa route offers an unforgettable trek through Bhutan's remote and rugged terrain. Starting from the Paro Chu, the trail follows the ancient caravan route to Tibet, moving through the Seo Valley and deep into the shadows of majestic peaks such as Mt. Chomolhari (7,314 meters) and Mt. Jitchu Drake (7,000 meters). The trek ascends over the Nele La Pass (4,250 meters) into the Lingshi Valley, home to nomadic communities that rely on sheep and yaks for their livelihoods. The Seo Valley, dotted with numerous lakes, is a paradise for anglers.

At Lingshi, you'll encounter the remnants of a once-powerful border fortress, now serving as the residence of the valley's administrator. From this vantage point, it's a day's trek to the Tibetan plateau.

As you continue east, you'll cross three high passes: Gobu La (4,650 meters), Jarmila (4,600 meters), and Shingela (4,900 meters). The valley of Laya Gasa lies within the Masakhang mountain region, the source of the Mo Chu River flowing through Punakha. The people of Laya Gasa are distinct from other Bhutanese, also living a nomadic lifestyle. The route to Punakha passes by historic sites, including the Gasa Fort and the renowned hot springs of Laya Gasa.
