Embark on an exciting drive along the Kathmandu to Dhunche-Syabrubesi highway, journeying through the picturesque Himalayan foothills. You'll begin in the warm sub-tropical region, stopping at Trisuli Bazaar before ascending on winding roads into the cooler alpine landscapes. As you pass charming farm villages and towns, you'll eventually reach Dhunche, situated at 1,950 meters—serving as the headquarters of Rasuwa district and the gateway to Langtang National Park.
From Dhunche, the road zigzags downhill, leading you to Syabrubesi, a vibrant village inhabited by the Tamang people, nestled in the shadow of the majestic Ganesh and Langtang Himal. Continuing your drive, you’ll finally arrive in Kyirong, where you'll enjoy a cozy overnight stay in a comfortable lodge, surrounded by stunning mountain views.
2Day 02-At Kyirong acclimatization day and explore Tibetan culture and custom.
In Kyirong, take a day for acclimatization and to familiarize yourself with Tibetan culture. Enjoy short walks around the village, where you can immerse yourself in the local Buddhist customs and traditions. As you explore, you'll be treated to stunning views of the Ganesh and Langtang northern faces, enhancing your experience of this serene and culturally rich environment. This is the perfect opportunity to connect with the landscape and the welcoming Tibetan community.
3Day 03-Drive to Saga 4,400m - 05 hrs.
After breakfast, your drive continues across the vast Tibetan plateau, offering breathtaking views as you traverse several high passes. Along the way, enjoy brief stops at quaint villages and nomadic camps, where you can observe sheep and yaks grazing in their natural habitat.
As you journey deeper into remote Tibet, you'll pass through charming farm villages until you reach a bridge over the Brahmaputra River, known as the Yarlung Tsangpo, which flows from the sacred Mt. Kailash. Upon reaching Saga, a town gradually developing with comfortable lodges, hotels, and restaurants, you'll check into the best available accommodations for a restful overnight stay.
4Day 04-Drive to the west side of Manasarovar at Chu-Gompa 4,545 m - 06 hrs.
In the morning, you'll set off on a scenic drive past Saga town, surrounded by the untouched wilderness of Tibet. After several hours on the winding road, you’ll climb to a pass at about 4,900 meters, offering stunning views of snow-capped peaks that border Nepal. Continuing your journey, you'll arrive at the windswept village of Paryang.
As you drive toward the Kailash region, the route leads you through the picturesque Barkha Valley, showcasing barren landscapes and small farm villages. Along the way, you may spot nomadic camps with large Tibetan tents that serve as teahouses and restaurants.
The drive will then take you up to the Mayam-la Pass, reaching an elevation of 5,050 meters. After descending, you'll travel along a relatively level track before gradually approaching Lake Manasarovar. Your day will conclude with an overnight stop near the lake at Chu-Gompa, where you'll enjoy breathtaking views of both Lake Manasarovar and the majestic Mt. Kailash.
5Day 05-At Manasarovar Lake afternoon drive to Darchen 4,620 m.
In the morning, enjoy free time at the sacred Lake Manasarovar, nestled between the towering peaks of Mt. Kailash (6,714 meters) and the Gurla Mandhata Mountain Range (7,694 meters). This holy lake, believed to represent the mind of God, offers a serene backdrop for reflection and spiritual practice. Pilgrims can perform puja rites and take ritual dips in the shallow areas along the shore.
Considered the holiest lake in Asia for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains, the best times to visit are in late autumn and early spring when the water levels are lower, allowing for closer access to the shoreline. For those interested, an optional drive around the lake, which takes about four hours, can be arranged.
After your rituals, embark on a short hike to Chu Gompa, a monastery perched on a cliff that showcases stunning Buddhist art and ancient idols of the Buddha and other revered figures.
In the afternoon, a brief drive will take you to Darchen, the main town near Mt. Kailash. Here, you’ll find a bustling market filled with shops, stores, and guesthouses, offering a glimpse into traditional Tibetan life and culture. During this auspicious time, Darchen is often bustling with Tibetan and Indian pilgrims preparing for the Kora, or circumambulation of Mt. Kailash.
6Day 06-Drive past Darchen to Tarboche 4,680 m start to walk to Dhirapuk 4,970 m -05 hrs in lodge or camping.
After enjoying your time at sacred Lake Manasarovar, the morning begins with a short drive through the Barkha Valley, heading beyond Darchen to reach Tarboche, a significant holy spot in the region. From here, you'll have breathtaking views of the west face of Mt. Kailash, marking the start of your sacred journey.
Your holy walk begins with a wide, gentle trail leading north toward Shershong. As you walk, take in the stunning scenery and the spiritual ambiance surrounding you. The path gradually climbs, bringing you closer to your overnight stop at Dhiraphuk Gompa, where you'll be treated to magnificent views of the north face of Mt. Kailash.
Depending on the season, you'll find a multitude of pilgrims, some staying in guesthouses and others in tents. If you're camping, you'll have the comfort of your own facilities, allowing for a unique experience in this sacred setting. Enjoy the tranquil atmosphere and reflect on the significance of your pilgrimage as the day draws to a close.
7Day 07-Trek to Zutul-Puk 4,760 m and over high Dorma-la pass - 6 hrs.
From Dhiraphuk, your morning begins with a continued ascent along the uphill trail, leading you onto the moraine. After about two hours of steady climbing, you'll face a steep section to reach the top of the Dorma-la Pass, towering at 5,630 meters (18,525 feet). This is the highest point of your pilgrimage and offers the closest views of Mt. Kailash's north face.
At this holy spot, you'll find a large boulder representing the goddess Dolma (or Dromo, Tara), adorned with thousands of colorful prayer flags and offerings from both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. Take a moment to reflect and appreciate the spiritual significance of this remarkable place.
After a restful break, the trail descends into the Lamchu Valley, where the terrain flattens out. A pleasant walk brings you to Zutul-Puk Gompa, your overnight stop. Depending on your preference, you can choose to stay in a lodge or a tented camp.
Zutul-Puk means "cave" in Tibetan, named after the sacred cave where the poet and saint Milarepa meditated in the early 11th century. You'll even find his footprints etched on the cave's roof. Enjoy the serene environment and the rich history that surrounds you as the day comes to an end.
8Day 08-Zutul-Puk to Darchen and Sanga
Your pilgrimage trek culminates at Darchen, where you’ll take a moment to reflect on the spiritual journey you've undertaken. After completing your parikrama, you’ll drive to Horfe for an overnight stay in a camp or guest house.
As you settle in, you'll feel a profound sense of spiritual satisfaction, having participated in the sacred rites and embraced the beauty of the journey. 9Day 09-Drive to Kyirong - 05 hrs journey with an overnight in local guest-house.
After an exhilarating time at Kailash, you’ll begin your drive back to Kyirong, traversing the stunning Tibetan plateau. This overland journey takes about five hours along a newly opened route, offering breathtaking views of the vast, arid landscape.
As you approach the border town of Kyirong, you'll have one last chance to soak in the unique beauty of this remote region. Once you arrive, settle into your accommodation for the night, reflecting on the profound experiences and spiritual connections made during your pilgrimage. This final stop in Tibet provides a moment to appreciate the journey before crossing back into Nepal.
10Day 10-Drive back to Kathmandu - 07 hrs
As you bid farewell to your Tibetan guides and drivers, your journey begins with a short drive to cross the border at Rasuwa Gadhi. After completing the necessary visa and customs formalities, you’ll re-enter Nepal, continuing on a dirt road toward Syabrubesi village.
Following a refreshing break, the journey continues uphill to Dhunche, where you can take in the stunning mountain views. As you drive back to Kathmandu, enjoy the lush green hills, picturesque farms, and charming villages that dot the landscape.
Upon reaching Kathmandu, you’ll be transferred to your hotel, where you can unwind or explore the vibrant city. Take the opportunity to shop for souvenirs and reflect on the unforgettable experiences from your pilgrimage to Mt. Kailash.
