Overview

The Trek to Jomsom Muktinath, reaching an altitude of 3,800 meters (12,464 feet), is an accessible adventure for those with moderate fitness. This trek follows the Kali Gandaki River Gorge, offering awe-inspiring views of Annapurna I and Dhaulagiri, both towering over 8,000 meters (26,240 feet). Traverse through diverse landscapes, from the world's deepest gorge to nearly treeless barren terrain, experiencing steep rocky trails, and panoramic vistas of peaks like Nilgiri, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri.

The journey begins with a trek through rice terraces and traditional villages of the Gurung people. In Tatopani, enjoy a relaxing dip in natural hot springs. Continue through Jomsom and Kagbeni, the gateway to the upper Mustang region, where you'll see the grandeur of the Dhaulagiri Glacier and the first views of the Tibetan Plateau. The trek culminates at Muktinath (3,800 meters), a revered Hindu pilgrimage site with its 108 sacred waterfalls and mysterious natural gas fires. From Muktinath, descend to Jomsom, where you can explore the gateway to the "Forbidden Kingdom of Mustang" and witness ancient traditions.

A flight from Jomsom returns you to Pokhara, and from there, a scenic drive through green mountains brings you back to Kathmandu.

Package plans (Itinerary)

1Day 01-Arrival day in Kathmandu [1,300m/4,264 ft].

Upon your arrival at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), our representative will meet you. After completing customs formalities, including visa procedures, collect your luggage and look for our representative holding a Nepal Highpoint Trekking & Expedition display board at the arrival gate. You will then be transferred to Hotel Family or a similar category hotel. After checking in, you have the option to rest, explore the city, or visit our office, depending on your interests and condition.

2Day 02-Kathmandu Sightseeing Tour

We start our guided tour of Kathmandu with visits to four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. First, we explore Kathmandu Durbar Square, which is home to the historic palaces of the medieval Kings who once ruled over the Kathmandu Kingdom. Next, we visit Pashupatinath Temple, a sacred Hindu site housing a revered linga (phallic symbol) of Lord Shiva, and Aryaghat, a significant cremation site on the banks of the Bagmati River. We then proceed to Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest stupas in the world and a major Buddhist pilgrimage destination, renowned for its over 50 Tibetan gompas (monasteries). Finally, we visit Swayambhunath, commonly known as the Monkey Temple due to the large population of monkeys in the area. This site is revered for its spiritual significance and panoramic views of Kathmandu. Overnight stay in Kathmandu. Breakfast included.

3Day 03-Fly to Pokhara [823m/2,700ft] and Trek to Tikhedhunga [1,552m/5,090ft]: 4-5 hrs.

In the early morning, take a scenic flight to Pokhara. For the best views of the majestic Himalayas, choose a seat on the right side of the plane. Upon arrival in Pokhara, you'll be greeted by stunning vistas of Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Machhapuchhre, and the five peaks of the Annapurna range. Pokhara, known as the City of Lakes, offers opportunities for fishing, boating, and swimming in its beautiful lakes. After resting, drive to Nayapul to begin your trek. The trail starts on the northern side of Bhurung Khola, climbing through lush subtropical forests and occasionally along carved cliffside paths. Cross the Modi Khola River via a suspension bridge to reach the village of Tikhedhunga, where you'll continue your journey.

4Day 04-Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani [2,750m/9,020ft]: 6-7 hrs.

From Tikhedhunga, the trail descends and crosses the Burungdi Khola before embarking on a strenuous climb to Ghorepani. The ascent to Ghorepani involves a steep and challenging hike up to Ulleri, where the path is lined with thousands of stone steps and boulders, testing your stamina and endurance. Ghorepani, whose name translates to "horse-water" in Nepali, was historically a vital campsite for traders, and now serves as a popular stop for trekkers. The village features a variety of small shops and stalls selling local products and crafts. As Ghorepani is situated at a higher altitude than Tikhedhunga, you'll notice the chill in the air, especially during the evening, marking the transition to a cooler climate.

5Day 05-Ghorepani to Tatopani [1,190m/3,904ft]: 5-6 hrs.

Ghorepani is divided into two sections: the upper and lower parts. We stay in the higher section, which provides panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including Annapurna South and Nilgiri. From Ghorepani, we descend steeply to Sikha, a sizable village, and then continue our descent to Ghar Khola Village. After crossing a suspension bridge, the trail ascends to Tatopani. The name "Tatopani" means "Hot Water" in Nepali, referring to the natural hot springs in the area. These hot springs are a popular spot for trekkers to relax and soothe their tired muscles after the day's hike.

6Day 06-Tatopani to Ghasa [2,110m/6,922ft]: 5-6 hrs.

The trail now follows the Kali Gandaki River, which carves through one of the world's deepest gorges, with its 2,200-meter depth squeezed between the towering 8,000-meter peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, which are just 38 kilometers apart. Continuing along this dramatic landscape, we pass Dana and reach Rupse Chahara, a stunning waterfall. The path then leads to Kopche Pani and ascends further to the Thakali village of Ghasa. Ghasa is a haven for bird watchers, offering an opportunity to observe a diverse array of bird species in its scenic surroundings.

7Day 07-Ghasa to Marpha [2,680m/8,792ft]: 4-5hrs.

A steep climb through the forest brings you to Lete Khola, and then onward to the village of Lete. Continuing east along the Kali Gandaki, the trail leads you to Larjung Village. From Larjung, the path crosses via Tukuche, located at 2,590 meters, and passes through apple orchards and vegetable farms that supply produce to the entire region. The trek then reaches Marpha Village, renowned for its traditional architecture and as a center for apple production.

8Day 08-Marpha to Kagbeni [2,810/9,218ft]: 4-5 hrs.

The trail continues along the valley side, gradually ascending before crossing a low ridge to reach Jomsom Village. From Jomsom, you cross the Panga Khola to arrive at Ekle Bhatti, meaning "lonely pub." Due to the strong afternoon winds, the trek from Jomsom is often breezy, as you follow a gradual path along the Kali Gandaki River bed for about three hours. After a refreshing stop at Ekle Bhatti, a leisurely hour’s walk takes you to Kagbeni, a fascinating village situated at the confluence of two rivers. Kagbeni is notable for its windswept charm and its historical role as a key stop on the ancient Trans-Himalayan salt trade route to Tibet via the Upper Mustang region. (B, L, D)

9Day 09-Kagbeni to Muktinath [3,710m/12,170ft]: 5-6 hrs.

Our journey begins with a special permit check, and we proceed to the riverbank of the Kali Gandaki, walking upstream. Along the way, you'll encounter numerous scenic spots perfect for photo opportunities. From Kagbeni, the path ascends steeply, joining the direct trail to Khingar at 3,200 meters. The terrain transitions into a desert-like landscape as we continue climbing through this arid region. The trail then leads us through Jarkot Village before reaching our final destination of Muktinath.

10Day 10-Muktinath to Jomsom [2,715m/8,910ft]: 5-6 hrs.

Muktinath is a significant pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. In the morning, we visit the sacred Muktinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. For Hindus, Muktinath is revered as a "Muktikhsetra," or a region of liberation and salvation. The temple features water spouts that channel a stream flowing above it, and there is also a nearby Buddhist monastery. From Muktinath, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Dhaulagiri peak. The site exemplifies the religious harmony found in Nepal. After our visit, we retrace our steps back to Jomsom.

11Day 11-Jomsom to Pokhara by flight.

After breakfast, we head to the airport for a 30-minute scenic flight back to Pokhara. The flight offers dramatic views between the towering Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountains. Upon arrival at Pokhara, you'll be transferred to a lakeside hotel. The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore the beautiful Pokhara valley at your own pace. Stroll along the banks of Phewa Lake, Nepal’s second-largest lake, and marvel at the reflection of the Fish Tail Mountain in the water. You might choose to take a boat ride on the lake or enjoy a walk to the World Peace Pagoda. In the evening, you can further explore the vibrant lakeside area. Overnight at the hotel.

12Day 12-Drive to Kathmandu.

After breakfast, we embark on a 200-kilometer drive back to Kathmandu. For the best views along the route, try to sit on the left side of the vehicle. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you'll be transferred to your hotel. Take this time to connect with fellow travelers, organize your photos, or simply relax. You might also want to do some last-minute shopping or enjoy a celebratory dinner with our staff. Overnight in Kathmandu.
