Introduction:
Classic Everest Base Camp Trekking offers a unique adventure along the original route to the world’s highest base camp, providing an opportunity to explore the hidden areas of the Everest region that are less frequented by other trekkers.
This trek diverges from the mainstream paths, bypassing the popular Lukla airstrip and instead reviving the classic trail from Jiri, which has been somewhat forgotten. With Nepal High Point Treks, you’ll rediscover this historic route and experience its scenic and cultural richness.
The journey begins with an overland drive from Kathmandu to Jiri, often called the "Switzerland of Nepal" due to its stunning scenery of snow-capped peaks, lush valleys, and rolling green hills dotted with farm villages and terraced fields.
From Jiri, the trek continues through charming farm villages and verdant woodlands, with a climb into cooler regions covered by dense forests of rhododendron, magnolia, birch, hemlock, pine, oak, and fir trees. In spring, the hills come alive with wildflowers, offering breathtaking views.
As you trek through traditional Sherpa and Rai villages such as Kenja, Sete, Junbesi, and Nunthala, you'll eventually reach the bustling hub of Khumbu Valley in Namche Bazaar. This vibrant village, known for its Saturday market, serves as a key acclimatization point. A rest day here includes a short hike to acclimatize and prepare for the journey ahead.
Proceeding from Namche, you’ll trek to Thyangboche, renowned for its impressive monastery set amidst green woodlands and mountains. The trail then leads into higher altitudes where the forest gives way to dry, rugged terrain, bringing you closer to the towering Everest.
The trek culminates with a visit to Everest Base Camp, where you’ll experience the thrill of being at the foot of the mighty Everest. A climb to Kalapathar offers the highest viewpoint of the adventure, providing a glorious panorama of Everest and the surrounding peaks.
After savoring the stunning vistas and memorable experiences, you'll return to Namche and continue to the Sherpa town of Lukla. From there, a scenic flight takes you back to Kathmandu, concluding your incredible journey on the Classic Everest Base Camp Trek.

Embark on an intriguing overland journey heading east from Kathmandu along the historic Nepal-Tibet/China Friendship Highway. After a few hours of scenic driving, you'll reach the Bhote Kosi River. From here, leave the main road and ascend the winding uphill route to Charikot, a charming town in the Dolkha district offering stunning views of Gaurishankar, Melung-Tse, and distant glimpses of Langtang and Everest.
Continuing on, descend to the Tama Kosi River before climbing up to Jiri, a picturesque hill town often referred to as the "Switzerland of Nepal" due to its beautiful location amidst hills and valleys, cooler climate, and views of snow-capped peaks.
After an overnight stay in Jiri, we begin our trek with a short morning drive to Bhandar village, also known as Chyangma. This village is a cultural blend of Tamang, Newar, and predominantly Sherpa communities. From Bhandar, our adventure truly begins as we descend through farm areas and pass several villages to reach Kenja. This moderate-sized village is nestled in a valley beneath the high hills of Lamjura and Pikey Danda, offering views of the Number Peaks.
From Kenja, we embark on a steep uphill climb to our overnight stop at Sete village. The temperature will begin to drop as we ascend, marking the transition to cooler conditions.
Begin your morning trek with a steep climb through a forest of rhododendron, pine, and oak trees, passing small farmlands and hamlets. After several hours of ascent, you'll reach the Lamjura-La Pass, marked by a prominent stupa and a few lodges. From the pass, descend through the forest to the Sherpa village of Toctoc.
After a brief stop, continue along a winding path to Junbesi. This charming and expansive Sherpa village is home to an intriguing monastery and a high school funded by the Hillary Trust.
After a pleasant stop in Junbesi, begin your morning walk along a winding path with glimpses of Mt. Everest and other snow-capped peaks. Descend to a river and then make a short climb to Ringmo village, where you'll stop for lunch. Following your break, enjoy a slow climb through the forest to reach Trakshindo Pass, located at 3,070 meters. The pass is marked by mani stones and a chorten, offering views of the Number Peaks, Kusum Kanguru, Thamserku, and Kantega.
From Trakshindo Pass, descend to Nunthala, passing through Tak Shindo village with its historic monastery. Continue downhill to the farmlands on the outskirts of Nunthala. A short walk from the bottom of the hill will bring you to the larger village of Nantahala, also known as Manidingma, a community of Rai and Sherpa people.
As you leave the Solu region and enter the cooler air of the Khumbu area, your morning trek begins with a descent through the forest to a bridge over the Dudh Kosi River. After crossing the bridge, you will follow a winding uphill path to reach Jubing village.
From Jubing, continue with an hour-long climb to Khari-Khola, a sizable village inhabited by both Sherpa and Magar tribes. After a brief rest, tackle a steep ascent for about an hour to reach Bupsa. This small village, perched on a ridge, offers stunning views of rolling hills and valleys.
Leaving Bupsa, your trek ascends into the high Khumbu region where temperatures drop and the terrain shifts to alpine woodland. The journey takes you over the Kharte Dande Pass at 3,880 meters, descending to the village of Puiyan (also known as Paya) at 2,800 meters. Nestled within the forest, Puiyan offers a pleasant stop for lunch.
Following lunch, continue on a winding trail with views of Lukla town and its airstrip in the distance. The trek then descends to Surkhe village, where you'll spend the night in the heart of the Khumbu region.
Morning Departure from Surkhe: Begin your day with an hour-long climb to Choplung village, where the trails from Lukla and Jiri converge. From Choplung, continue your trek towards Phakding, passing through charming villages and farmlands. Enjoy panoramic views of the rolling hills and valleys along the way. Arrive at Phakding, situated beside the Dudh Kosi River, and settle in for an overnight stay.
Start your day with a leisurely walk to the Sagarmatha National Park entrance gate, where you can take a moment to refresh. Cross a bridge and continue to Jorsalle, the last village before Namche Bazaar, where you can enjoy a potential lunch stop. The trail then meanders along the riverbed through lush forested areas. Prepare for a climb as you ascend from the last high bridge to reach the vibrant and renowned Namche Bazaar.
Upon arrival, check into a comfortable and cozy lodge. Take some time to explore Namche Bazaar, the bustling hub of the Khumbu region, known for its well-stocked shops and lively atmosphere. On Saturdays, the village hosts a colorful and busy market, offering a glimpse into local life.
Take a well-deserved rest day in Namche Bazaar for acclimatization before venturing into higher altitudes. Use this opportunity to explore the surrounding area and enjoy some short walks that offer stunning views of the majestic peaks. A recommended hike is to the Everest View Hotel, which takes about four hours round-trip and provides spectacular panoramic views of Mount Everest and the impressive Ama Dablam.
While in Namche, visit the informative museum that delves into the rich culture of the Khumbu Sherpa, local flora and fauna, and the history of mountaineering expeditions. Spend the rest of your afternoon at leisure, exploring the vibrant village and its many shops.
After enjoying your time in Namche Bazaar, start your morning with a short climb followed by a pleasant walk on a well-defined trail offering magnificent views of Everest, Ama Dablam, and an array of other peaks. The trail then meanders through lush woodland before descending to the Imjatse River, where you'll reach Phunke-Tenga, a small settlement nestled in the forest. This is a great spot for a lunch break in the midst of nature.
In the afternoon, continue your trek with a climb through forested areas, taking in stunning views of peaks like Kangtenga and Thamserku. Your route will lead you to a broad plateau at Thyangboche, renowned for its colorful Buddhist monastery. Here, you'll have the opportunity to visit the monastery's interior and witness the monks and priests engaged in their religious practices and prayers.
Thyangboche is a picturesque location surrounded by high peaks, including Everest and the striking Ama Dablam, set amidst a forest of rhododendrons, magnolias, oaks, junipers, birches, and firs. It’s an ideal place to spend the night. If you're trekking in October or November, you might be fortunate enough to experience the vibrant Mani-Rimdu festival, where monks perform traditional mask dances in celebration.
Start your day with breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. Your trek begins with a descent through lush green forests to reach Deoboche. From there, continue walking to the Imjatse River and cross a steel bridge. As you proceed, the environment shifts from forested areas to more arid, windswept terrain, typical of the higher altitudes.
Your path will lead you to Pangboche, the last permanent village on the route to Everest Base Camp. This village offers various lodges and facilities for trekkers. After passing Pangboche, continue your trek with a series of ascents and descents until you reach a river. From here, you'll undertake the final climb of the day, which takes about an hour, to reach Dingboche.
Dingboche, situated in the scenic Imjatse Valley, provides spectacular views of the northern side of Ama Dablam and, to the east, Island Peak. The village's higher elevation offers a great opportunity to acclimatize and enjoy the stunning Himalayan vistas.
After a refreshing rest day in Dingboche, your trek continues with a morning climb to a ridge adorned with Buddhist prayer flags and monuments. This short ascent rewards you with panoramic views of the towering peaks that surround you.
From the ridge, follow a gradual and winding path above Pheriche Valley, offering stunning views of Cholatse and Taboche peaks. As you progress, you’ll reach Thugla, a small settlement where the Khumbu Glacier meets a turbulent river. Here, you can take a break for lunch and rest.
Post-lunch, continue your trek with a climb to Thugla Pass. This area is marked by a memorial dedicated to mountaineers who have lost their lives in the pursuit of climbing in the Khumbu and Everest regions. The memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by those who came before you.
From the pass, the trail continues with a gradual ascent to Lobuche. Located at the edge of a wide valley, Lobuche offers spectacular views of Lobuche East and West. The village provides a well-deserved rest stop with basic amenities to prepare for the next stages of your trek.
Today's adventure takes you to the iconic Everest Base Camp. Start your day with a walk through a flat valley, gradually climbing until you reach a ridge above the Khumbu Glacier. The trail then traverses rocky moraines and ice fields, leading you to Gorakshep. Situated at the base of Kalapathar and Mt. Pumori, Gorakshep provides a brief rest stop before you continue to your ultimate destination.
From Gorakshep, proceed east to Everest Base Camp. This is the highlight of your trek, where you’ll be surrounded by the awe-inspiring Khumbu Icefall, glaciers, and towering peaks like Nuptse, Everest, and Lhotse. During the peak mountaineering season of April to May, the base camp is bustling with the activity of expedition tents, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of this legendary spot.
After taking in the incredible views and celebrating reaching Everest Base Camp, retrace your steps back to Gorakshep for an overnight stay. This will prepare you for the next phase of your trek, which includes climbing Kalapathar for panoramic views and making your way back to Lukla.
Rise early for an unforgettable ascent to Kalapathar, the highest point of your trek at 5,545 meters. This rocky hilltop offers a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding peaks, including a close-up of Mount Everest and Mt. Pumori. After soaking in the breathtaking scenery, descend back to Gorakshep for breakfast.
Post-breakfast, continue your trek down to Pheriche Valley. The walk offers a scenic descent through the rugged terrain you’ve traversed, heading towards the lush, serene environment of Pheriche. Here, you’ll find a comfortable lodge for your overnight stay. Pheriche, nestled in a picturesque valley near Dingboche, also hosts the Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) which provides valuable support to trekkers in the region.
From Pheriche, enjoy a gentle walk on nearly flat terrain as you head downhill towards Pangboche village. This section of the trek allows you to reflect on your memorable adventure at Everest Base Camp and Kalapathar without the concerns of high altitude, as the route gradually loses elevation.
After reaching Pangboche, continue your journey with a steady climb to the beautiful village of Thyangboche. Here, you can visit the vibrant Thyangboche Monastery, set against a backdrop of lush green woodlands and stunning mountain views.
From Thyangboche, the trek follows a scenic trail with a mix of ups and downs, ultimately leading you to Namche Bazaar. This bustling hub of the Khumbu region will be your final stop before heading back to Lukla. Enjoy your last night in this lively village, soaking in the unique atmosphere and preparing for the journey ahead.
On the last day of your Everest Base Camp adventure, prepare for a long trek as you make your way back to Lukla. The journey begins with a descent through lush forests and along river valleys, reaching the Sagarmatha National Park entrance and exit at Monjo village.
From Monjo, continue your trek past Phakding, where you’ll encounter the final stretch of the trail. A short climb will bring you to Lukla, where you'll enjoy your last overnight stay in the Khumbu region.
